I still can't find any SIS 771 retail mainboard and I still hope for new Phenom chipsets.

I'm looking forward to see how Asus overcame the PCIe latencies that Creative whined about.
  • Gary Key - Thursday, June 7, 2007 - link

Creative whined about it, turns out that was a smoke screen, yes latencies can be affected by PCIe, but not to the point where Creative could not make a PCIe sound card. ASUS is telling us the PCIe card performs best, especially under Vista. We have both cards coming to us in a couple of weeks, so we will see. ;)

Any news on the Intel version of the Nvidia MCP73? Will this be available this Christmas along with the new G92 graphics cards? I'm hoping for good quad core Kentsfield and Penryn support.
  • baronzemo78 - Tuesday, June 5, 2007 - link

Also Is the MCP73 an integrated graphics product or high end SLI enthusiast motherboard? I've heard conflicting things.

I just read on the newswires that "AMD 'Barcelona' Processors are to be Showcased on Server Platforms from Supermicro, TYAN and Uniwide at Computex" this week...

Some in-depth coverage of the new Shuttles would be very much appreciated. The press release leaves a bit much to the imagination.
  • Gary Key - Thursday, June 7, 2007 - link

Shuttle only had a couple of systems at the booth, the most interesting one being a X38 in their new SFF case. :)

What's up with AMDelay? late Q3 or into Q4 for Barcelona and Agena, and more delays for the mid-level GPUs. =(

I think it's possible that Gary's sources have it wrong...
3 Server partners at Computex demonstrated Barcelona servers today...

At the Computex show, Taiwanese motherboard and server maker Tyan was showing off a two-socket, 2U rack-mounted server with two Barcelona chips that has eight DDR2 DIMM sockets per processor

Super Micro, the American motherboard and server maker that just went public and has strong links to Taiwan, is demonstrating its AS-4021M-T2R+ server at Computex. This is a two-socket Barcelona box that comes in a 4U rack or tower configuration

Uniwide Technologies, which hails from Korea, is showing a single-socket Barcelona box that has an interesting twist. Rather than use an Opteron 1000 series chip in this machine, Uniwide's UniServer 1512 uses an Opteron 2000 series processor. The reason why is that the Opteron 1000 series processors are limited to four DIMM slots per processor socket, while the 2000 series can have eight DIMMs per socket

There are early chips avaiable for the limited benchmark sessions. These chips were running at 1.6GHz and 2.0GHz. My sources are still holding true to a very limited release schedule in Q3 with production not ramping up until early Q4. I will tell you right now, until AMD gets the speeds up to at least 2.3GHz, the numbers I have seen in private are not that exciting. This chip really comes alive around 2.6GHz. The last stepping would not even post in several boards, we had a look at new steppings that just arrived in our private meetings. We understand there is still another spin to come this month. I am not being anti-AMD here, just reporting what we have been told by sources inside and outside of AMD. We want them to do well with the K10 series, the market needs them to do well.

3 articles at a time? OK, maybe in 2~3 hours. What hours? 3~5 AM. Don't you guys want to raise the pageviews? Then what's the hurry? While everyone's sleeping?

I am not finished yet. ;)
  • Chunga29 - Tuesday, June 5, 2007 - link

Don't know where you've been, but I read the AMD piece over 24 hours ago, and right as I finished it the cooler article went up. Why don't you look at the actual comment times before making yourself look like an ignorant dweeb? Let me help out:

    AMD: 1st comment at Jun 4, 2007 1:09 AM
    HSF: 1st comment at Jun 4, 2007 5:19 AM
    Computex: 1st comment at Jun 5, 2007 3:29 AM

So there's at least a one day gap. Given the first and third are relatively short, and the other is a cooler review (i.e. 80% repeat text - just look at the graphs, read the intro and conclusion if you want), I'd like more content. But I do see that you've commented on all three now and basically said the content sucks, Anandtech sold out, etc. Why bother to come and comment if all you have is negativity?

Ahhh... back to work. Another boring day in the datacenter.

Speaking of X38 and G35, they should be available in late July to coincide with the new price cuts to existing products and the introduction of the 1333FSB processors.

Is that definitely confirmed? This is a matter of some importance to me, because I'm on the verge of putting together a new system. I think I can wait till late July, but not till late September. Cheaper quad-core processors in July by themselves have me agonising about whether to buy now or wait 8 weeks, but if cheaper Core 2 Quad processors and X38 motherboards will be available in July, that's reason enough to hold off.
  • defter - Tuesday, June 5, 2007 - link

Yes, prices will decrease at 22th of July: http://www.hkepc.com/bbs/itnews.php?tid=789466">http://www.hkepc.com/bbs/itnews.php?tid=789466

If you want a cheap quad core, then cheapest Xeon 3xxx quad core will cost even less, about $224. However it will run at a lower clockspeed (2.16GHz instead of 2.4GHz for Q6600).

I know that, any idiot knows that. :) What's much more interesting is the claim that X38 motherboards will be launched at the same time. Has that definitely been confirmed?

The boards will be ready from several suppliers in late July, but it appears after some conversations today that Intel wants to hold the release date to August, why, who the hell knows...

Promptly after the Derek's incredibly hostile AMD article was replaced by Westley's HSF review, which also reads highly subjective and provocative. Now to clean up the mess, Gary had to come all the way from Taiwan to the States. (didn't read Gary's piece yet, though)

I don't know what's going on with AT as of late??
  • Gary Key - Thursday, June 7, 2007 - link

Man, you must have had a bad day. :) I need to send you a magnet from Taiwan.

you mention a TDP of 36w but it would have been nice to mention the TDP of the p35 as well for comparison

also the asus P5K64 WS motherboard looks to have 4 full size PCI-e slots? but it only has 16/20 channels to play with? what the?
  • Tujan - Monday, June 11, 2007 - link

    for computer DIY'ers.?
Wonderin the problem with having some kind of pre-manufacturered (PCI,slot,or embedded) module for home DIY'ers. There is several 'FM radio offerings from graphics cards manufacturers. Yet the inclusion of both FM,AND..,..''AM"". What is the difficulty with putting these into a module ready for the standards of a computer ?

Is it the difficulty for 'liscencing',cost of implementation,or are the MB /IC manufacturers waiting for the newer station changovers to digital to take place ?

About the only thing missing from the computer armament presently available.Nice Asus system there.

Would an IC manufacturer need some kind of special liscencing from FCC for these components.?

P35 TDP is 16W, will get the rest for you when I return. The P5K64 WS will run 8x4x4x4 according to ASUS if you load all four slots. Flight Simulator looks nice on four monitors but that is about it. ;)
  • Chunga29 - Tuesday, June 5, 2007 - link

I don't even know the TDP of P965, 975X, 680i, etc. Why not list all those as well?

As for PCIe slots, x1 through x8 slots are pointless. Just use x16 slots everywhere. I don't care if they have x4 or x1 or x2 or x16 bandwidth; just do like Apple and only use x16 physical slots. They're backwards/downwards compatible (with the proper BIOS programming I guess?), so skip using anything less than an x16 connector. Maybe cost a few extra pennies for the plastic, but really, the benefits outweigh the minor price increase.
  • DigitalFreak - Tuesday, June 5, 2007 - link

It's more likely because of layout issues. You have a lot less space to place components on a board when you have 4 or more long 16x slots.
